The development of wireless and sensor technology was probably was first triggered by military applications. This development is now being widely used in many day to day applications including industrial process monitoring and control, machine health monitoring, environment and habitat monitoring, healthcare applications, home automation, and traffic control. A wireless sensor network, in its most basic form, is made of spatially distributed autonomous sensors which cooperatively monitor physical or environmental conditions. While wireless technology is well established as the today of technological developments, sensor technology will be the tomorrow of automation. In particular, wireless sensors are a key enabling technology for the emerging ‘cyber physical systems’ and ‘sixth sense technology’ which will ultimately improve the quality of life. To realize the absolute potential of wireless sensors, many challenges need to be addressed and noteworthy efforts have been made in this field.

With the help of wireless communication, today, we transfer information across the globe without the use of electrical conductors, simply known as wires. The distances involved may be short such as a few meters like in remote controls for television or music systems or really long like in radio communications. Wireless communication used to be considered as a branch of telecommunications. However now, it has become a branch by itself wherein it brings various developments under its umbrella.
